Tuimarishane is a student initiative that plans to create a peer-to-peer HIV/AIDS education network in Africa. It was created to address the lack of HIV/AIDS education programs geared toward students. In most communities in Africa, sex is still a taboo topic and the rare conversations about sex happen in secret. Because of the secretive nature in which the conversations about sex happen, very often people are misled and the wrong information is spread. Although there seems to be an increasing amount of shows and commercials about safe sex targeted towards youths, many youths are still left with multiple questions because there are very few judgement- free spaces where they can get the answers to their questions. In addition, STDs and STIs are often tied to stigmas and there are a lot of myths circulating about STDs/STIs. Therefore, less people are open to seeking help and to inform themselves. Often, many people choose not to know their status out of fear of being judged. Growing up in West Africa, I remember that sex education was nonexistent. Although it seems like there are a lot more resources available to youths, the resources are not used often because of the fear of being judged and due to sex being a taboo topic. In Ghana, we will be working with an organization called True Vision Ghana. True Vision Ghana is a non-profit organization that works to promote the realization of the rights of underprivileged children that are affected by HIV/AIDS.
